Golden Gate Midwinter - Race No. 3 ( 5 Races, 1 Throwouts ) on Saturday, January 5, 2002
Race No. 3 was a downwind start going to Mason, Harding Rock, Blackaller, Finish. A gaggle of boats fought for the pin end with Arbitrage and Good Timin winning the pole with Walloping Swede sneaking off on the inside. The Fleet compressed at the first mark and then split, halfreaching off around Alcatraz Island led by Arbitrage and Horseplay while the other half went high and above Alcatraz Island led by Good Timin and Walloping Swede. The wind filled from the North carrying the back of Alcatraz fleet around Harding well ahead of the split fleet. Arbitrage showed her strength by getting a bullet to go with her previous 2, DNC. Aquavit, Horseplay, Ultimatim and Jose Cuervo rounde out the top five. In the second half fleet, Good Timin and Wind Dance dueled it out in a Gybing war going into Blackaller. But Wind Dance caught up to some slower woodies and made contact and piroeutted around the mark with a 40 ft woodie. Oh Mid winter racing!
