Pacific Coast Championships - Race No. 1 on Saturday, June 8, 2002
34 boats headed out to the Berkley Circle in what was a perfect day for sailing, blue skies tee shirt weather and winds 12 to 16 knots. Course one, a double sausage, a very square line with current not much of a factor. Who said go right at the circle, the fleet split some going right and some going left and some playing the middle. As it turned out, left seem to pay all day. And oddly enough the left seemed to pay downwind also. Tiburon rounded the weather mark in the top ten but thought a jib would pay. I think several other boats went to the right side of the course downwind, when the fleet got down to the gates I think there was more pressure on the left. By now most of the fleet figured left was favorite, this meet sailing thru a very large fishing fleet. I found myself not only having to duck starboard tackers but also a large 40” fishing boat. So we came a little close and some guys had to pull in their lines, was that any reason for them to throw a net full of anchovies at us!!!! After the third upwind leg Blackhawk kicked everyone’s butts, Zuni Bear 2nd Wind Dance 3rd Nantucket 4th Streaker 5th at least that is the way Tiburon remembered it.
